Lady in a coat
Lady in a coat
First half of the 20th century

Bronze, ivory; casting, coloured patination
Signature «Alonzo»
"Lady in a coat" belongs to the type of “society lady” statuette that became widespread in decorative sculpture of the first half of the 20th century. The main emphasis is on the costume: the bronze coat forms a unified elongated volume, while coloured patination enlivens the surface and helps distinguish details of the cut. The pale ivory of the face and exposed parts of the body introduces a softer texture and sets off the saturated tone of the metal. The restrained pose presents the work above all as an image of modern elegance, in which fashion becomes an important part of the artistic conception. This treatment of the female type is especially characteristic of French cabinet sculpture of the interwar period.
