An oval-shaped gold snuffbox with a hinged top lid. The top lid, bottom, and sides of the snuffbox are decorated with painted enamel inserts in circular medallions. These medallions are enclosed within engraved borders and an engraved foliage-and-ribbon ornament beneath translucent green enamel. Inserts of orange agate serve as the background. The medallion on the top lid features a miniature executed in grey enamel on a dark red background using a technique that imitates a cameo (en camaïeu). The miniature depicts the "Procession of Bacchus". Flanking it are small circular medallions with inserts of moss agate. A similar decorative scheme is applied to the bottom of the snuffbox, where the central insert features a classical mythological subject: "The Education of the Infant Bacchus". The small medallions on the sides depict individual characters related to the main theme. The interior surfaces of the snuffbox are mirror-polished.
