Artist’s signature to the right of the miniature: Isabey. Hallmarks on the box: a partially rubbed maker's mark in lozenge; a guarantee mark for gold items, 1798–1809.

A gold lozenge-shaped box with a hinged lid. The sides and base are decorated with rectangular and lozenge-shaped reserves of translucent blue enamel over guilloché ground, bordered by bands of foliate and geometric patterns in blue and white enamel. The lid is set with a miniature by the artist J.-B. Isabey, featuring a painted portrait of Catherine of Württemberg, Queen of Westphalia, within a pearl-set border. The inner surface of the lid bears the inscription in French: "Donné // par l'Impératrice // à Joachim // le 10 mars 1862" (Given by the Empress to Joachim on March 10, 1862)
