The inscription is beneath the figure "Пришелъ неводъ съ одной рыбкою съ не простои рыбои Золотою" (the siene was pulled out of the sea, not with ordinary fish, but with the golden one).
It testifies that the plot of the composition is based on The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish by Alexander Pushkin.
