World Poetry Day: A Journey through rhymes and images

Established by UNESCO in 1999, World Poetry Day reminds us of the living word power and its ability to unite nations and epochs.
Poetry is not only the music of words, but also a powerful creative force capable of transforming literary images into visual myths. It is symbolic that on the eve of World Poetry Day, museum Collection has opened a new themed exhibition 'In the footsteps of Pechorin: book illustration and cabinet sculpture of the late 19th century’.

Our new project offers a look at the Caucasus through the prism of works by Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Pushkin, and Alexander Griboyedov, tracing how their immortal texts inspired fine art masters.
A unique dialogue of arts takes center stage: Mihály Zichy’s famous illustrations for the novel 'A Hero of Our Time' are showcased for the first time alongside cabinet sculptures by Eugene Lanceray, Vasiliy Grachev, and Felix Khodorovich; the poetic lines of great Russian poets serve not only as a source of narration but as an active co-author of the 19th century visual culture.
The works on display offer viewers a captivating journey in the footsteps of great writers, exploring how literature shapes our perception of countries, nations, and eras.

We invite you to celebrate World Poetry Day by opening a favorite volume of poems or visiting our new temporary exhibition, “in the footsteps of Pechorin: book illustration and cabinet sculpture of the second half of the 19th century,” where the poetic word resonates in a unique way.
Starting March 24, the museum is launching a new guided tour program that will help you immerse yourself more deeply in the atmosphere of the literary Caucasus of the 19th century.
