Museum “Collection” presents a new thematic exhibition ‘In the Footsteps of Pechorin'
Exhibits associated with Georgia and the adjacent regions of the Caucasus hold a prominent place within the museum Collection repository – paintings, engravings, drawings, maps, jewelry, and musical instruments created by leading Russian and foreign artisans of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The new exhibition "In the Footsteps of Pechorin": book illustration and cabinet sculpture of the late 19th century" is part of an ongoing series dedicated to the museum’s Caucasus-related collections (the exhibition "Land generous in tender affection", 2022, and the 2025 Mihály Zichy catalogue). The project focuses on the Caucasian journeys of Griboyedov, Pushkin, and Lermontov, as well as explores the artistic interpretation of their literary works in the visual arts of the second half of the 19th century.
For the first time, the exposition brings together Mihály Zichy's illustrations for the novel 'A Hero of Our Time' and cabinet sculptures by Eugene Lanceray, Vasiliy Grachev, and Felix Khodorovich, depicting the ethnic and social types of the local population. Together in a single project, these works allow visitors to step back into the Golden Age of Russian literature and embark on a captivating journey in the footsteps of great writers.
The project 'In the Footsteps of Pechori' offers the viewer not merely an encounter with outstanding works of art, but a journey through the cultural landscape of the Caucasus as seen through the prism of great literature. The exposition allows visitors to trace how a literary text became the starting point for a visual myth, and invites a thoughtful dialogue on how art shapes our perception of regions, eras, and peoples.
