May 18 is the International Museum Day
Museums around the world celebrate their holiday today – the International Museum Day. International Museum Day (IMD) is an international day that was established in 1977. A celebration is held every year on or around 18 May. It is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The event highlights a specific theme that changes every year and that is at the heart of the international museum community’s preoccupations. Thus, in 2012, the jubilee year -the 35th anniversary of the holiday’s establishment, the theme was «Museums in a changing world. New challenges, new inspirations", in 2013 it was – “Museums (memory + creativity = social change)”, in 2014 - "Museum collections make connections", in 2015 - "Museums for a Sustainable Society", in 2016 - "Museums and Cultural Landscapes". In 2017, according to the decision of ICOM, the International Museums’ Day is devoted to the theme - "Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums". The Museum Collection team congratulates all our colleagues, partners and friends from Russian and foreign museums on this holiday. Let there be more new interesting projects, let the audience expand and the popularity grow, let the new technologies enable the museum community become as open and accessible to everyone as possible!
