The arrangement of perforations and relief grooves determines four played melodies; the beginning of the melodies is marked by a larger rectangular perforation on the left side of the cylinder. The melodies are changed by shifting the cylinder. The third melody is "Radetzky March, Op. 228" (Radetzky Marsch, op. 228), written by the Austrian composer and conductor Johann Strauss I (14.03.1804–25.09.1849) in 1848. The march is dedicated to Field Marshal Count Joseph Radetzky von Radetz (Johann Josef Wenzel Anton Franz Karl, Graf Radetzky von Radetz, 02.11.1766–05.01.1858), who won a victory over the Sardinian army at the Battle of Custoza during the First Italian War of Independence. The march was written as a greeting to the troops returning with victory. The first performance took place on August 31, 1848, in Vienna at a water festival in honor of the Field Marshal. The piece was a resounding success.
