The elements of the automaton are positioned on the top panel of wooden base. The base is fashioned as rectangular case assembled from rectangular panels and raised on four low square feet. When the automaton is activated by a cord extending from an opening in the bottom panel, the figures come to life: the young woman's hands alternately lower onto the keys and rise, while the teacher's right hand and head move up and down. The action is accompanied by a melody played by the musical movement.
