Fifteen hand-carved handles

    Fifteen hand-carved handles

    Germany, Idar-Oberstein

    Agate, carnelian; carving, polishing

    Length 3.8 cm (each)

Known for five centuries as the world famous agate-carving center, Idar-Oberstein produced an array of agate household objects throughout the years. These are five hand-turned carnelian agate boot hook handles, which would have been later mounted with metal components. Historically interesting to mineral collectors and lovers of agate, they represent a view into a bygone world.
