The eyepiece surrounded by a white and translucent scarlet enamel on engine-turned background, the lens cover with translucent scarlet champlevé enamel with rosettes and gold stylized foliage pattern, the body-tube painted with musical trophies and flowers over blue background, seven blank draw-tubes.
This telescope is an of example of a richly decorated export piece, crafted for the Turkish market during the reign of the 31st Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Abdulmejid I (1839–1861). Known for his liberal views and fine education, Abdulmejid was the first Sultan to speak French. He carried forward the reform program initiated by his father, Mahmud II, restored the Hagia Sophia, built the Dolmabahçe Palace, and established the first French theatre in Constantinople.
