Gold oval snuffbox with a hinged lid. Oval medallion with the portrait of Ferdinand IV, the King of Naples and Sicily, in the military uniform with the star of St. Januarius order (founded in 1738), the star of St. Ferdinand order, the star of merit (founded 1804) and the star of Charles III order (founded 1771), framed by gold rim and cushion cut diamonds in silver frame is on the lid. The case is covered with dark blue translucent guilloche enamel and decorated with foliate patterns on pale blue background.
It is believed that this snuffbox was donated by Ferdinand IV to Captain Philip Charles Durham for the rendered services. In 1808, he had the bridge of His Majesty's Ship Renown as a part of the Mediterranean Fleet. In the autumn of the same year he accompanied the King’s son, Prince Leopold, from Gibraltar to Palermo, while the French warships were still a threat for any vessel passing by this part of the sea.
