The lid is decorated with a composition depicting the monument to Emperor Peter the Great – the work of sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet, against the background of the architectural landscape; inscription: "Peter I // Catherine II". The composition is enclosed in rocaille frame comprised of curls and surrounded by a strip of carved stylized leaves. An image of military attributes comprised of guns, cores, banners and trumpets enclosed in similar frame, is on the snuffbox bottom. The lateral sides are decorated with the architectural landscape. All images are in niello technique against the repousse background. The monument to Peter I - one of the symbols of St. Petersburg, was created by the French sculptor E.M. Falconet in 1775 according to the order of the Russian Empress Catherine II.
